Research Design Connections

As a designer, you want to create great spaces for people.

Good design requires everything you can bring to a project, including the latest news about what scientists are finding out about people and how they interact with the world around them.  Research Design Connections (RDC) is an easy, accessible way to keep on top of this expanding, and increasingly critical, body of knowledge.

The market for design services is encouraging designers to shift from intuition-based design to information-based design, so insights from the latest academic research are becoming essential for professional success.  Research Design Connections keeps you up to date by reviewing thousands of articles and presenting you with what you need to know.  It assesses material from psychology, sociology, anthropology, biology and other scientific fields as well as academic research in interior design, architecture, and landscape architecture.  It distills important, practical lessons from design-useful articles so you can apply them in the places you develop.

Research Design Connections presents the latest research findings.  You provide the inspiration and the design solution.  Articles answer questions such as:

  • What are the sorts of environments in which business people are most creative?
  • How should national culture influence design?  What about organizational culture or user personality?
  • What colors or art should healthcare designers feature to boost feelings of well-being?
  • How can and should designers work with their clients to improve the design process?
  • What are the psychological (and sales) ramifications of different retail floor plans?
  • What aspects of classrooms and training rooms encourage or discourage learning?
  • What makes a house a home?
  • What are the trends in place design?  How are/will demographic and social changes influence those trends?

The answers to these and many other questions are provided in a quarterly electronic newsletter, an archive of hundreds of past articles, and a daily blog (available to non-subscribers and subscribers alike).  The blog reports information in quick bursts; the newsletter explores relevant information in more detail.  Both are written in everyday language, not “science-ese.”

The only way to really understand what Research Design Connections can do for your practice and for you is to take a look.
